Every IT person knows the call: “My computer is doing something weird, can you fix it?” If you’re the family tech support, you’ve probably spent hours driving to a parent’s or relative’s house to click a few buttons.

CastAngel makes this painless. Your family member runs a single file, reads you a number, and you’re connected — seeing their screen, controlling their mouse, fixing the problem in minutes instead of hours.

This guide shows you how to set up a permanent remote support arrangement.

The Problem with Traditional Remote Support

ToolIssue for Non-Tech Users
Windows RDPRequires network config, admin rights, static IP
TeamViewerAccount creation, “commercial use detected” popups
AnyDeskSimilar account/install requirements
Phone instructions“Click the Start button… no, the Windows logo…”

CastAngel avoids all of these: one file, no install, no account, no configuration.

Setup Overview

There are two scenarios:

  1. Same network (you’re visiting, or both on home Wi-Fi): Direct connection, simplest setup
  2. Different networks (you’re at home, they’re elsewhere): Requires port forwarding or VPN

We’ll cover both.

Scenario 1: Same Network (Simplest)

Use this when you and your family member are on the same Wi-Fi (e.g., you’re visiting their house).

On Their PC (One-Time Setup)

  1. Download CastAngel-64.exe from castangel.com/download
  2. Save it to their Desktop — somewhere easy to find
  3. Double-click to run, click Agree on the disclaimer
  4. Right-click the tray icon → Show IP and Port
  5. Tell them: “Read me the number after IP:”

They’ll read something like 192.168.1.50. Write it down.

On Your PC

  1. Open a web browser
  2. Go to http://192.168.1.50:12377 (the number they read you)
  3. Enter username support and any password
  4. You’re now seeing their screen — take control and fix the issue

That’s it. Total setup time: under 2 minutes.

Scenario 2: Different Networks (Remote Support from Home)

When you’re at your house and they’re at theirs, you need to reach their PC over the internet.

Set up a lightweight VPN that puts both PCs on the same virtual network:

  1. Install Tailscale (free for personal use) on both PCs from tailscale.com
  2. On your family member’s PC, sign in with a Google or Microsoft account
  3. On your PC, sign in with the same account type
  4. Both PCs now have a 100.x.x.x IP address on the Tailscale network

Now use the Tailscale IP instead of the local IP — everything else works the same.

Advantages:

  • No router configuration needed
  • Works through any firewall
  • Encrypted connection
  • Free for up to 100 devices

Option B: Port Forwarding (One-Time Router Config)

If your family member is comfortable with router admin (or you can guide them):

  1. Log into their router (usually http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Find Port Forwarding or Virtual Server settings
  3. Forward port 12377 (TCP) to their PC’s local IP
  4. Find their public IP at whatismyip.com
  5. Connect from your PC: http://THEIR_PUBLIC_IP:12377

Note: Their public IP may change if they have a dynamic IP (most home internet). Consider a dynamic DNS service like DuckDNS for a stable hostname.

Making It Easy for Non-Tech Family Members

The key to stress-free remote support is making the start process as simple as possible.

Create a Desktop Shortcut

On their PC, create a batch file that starts CastAngel:

@echo off
start "" "C:\Users\TheirName\Desktop\CastAngel-64.exe"
echo CastAngel is starting...
echo Right-click the tray icon and select "Show IP and Port"
echo Read the IP number to your support person
pause

Save this as Start Support.bat on their desktop. Now they just double-click this file and follow the instructions.

Pre-Configure with a License

If you’ve purchased a CastAngel license, activate it on their PC so they don’t see the trial dialog:

  1. Run CastAngel on their PC
  2. Open the activation window (tray icon → Activate)
  3. Enter the license key you purchased
  4. Their PC is now permanently licensed

Write Down the Instructions

Leave a sticky note on their monitor:

NEED COMPUTER HELP?
1. Double-click "Start Support" on desktop
2. Right-click the CastAngel icon (bottom right, near clock)
3. Click "Show IP and Port"
4. Call [your name] and read them the IP number

What You Can Do Once Connected

Once you’re viewing their screen, you can:

  • See their screen in real-time — instantly understand what they’re seeing
  • Control mouse and keyboard — click, type, and navigate as if you were there
  • Transfer files — send them a fix script, download their photos for backup
  • Install software — download and install programs they need
  • Configure settings — change display resolution, set up email, fix browser issues

Security Tips for Remote Support

  1. Only run CastAngel when needed: Right-click tray icon → Exit when the support session is done. This prevents unauthorized access.

  2. Use strong passwords: If you set up user accounts, use passwords that are hard to guess but easy for your family member to type.

  3. Be present during the session: Stay on the phone with them while connected. They’ll feel more comfortable seeing you move their cursor, and you can explain what you’re doing.

  4. For ongoing support, use a VPN: Tailscale or ZeroTier are more secure than port forwarding because they require authentication on both ends.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

“I can’t find the tray icon”

The tray icon is in the system tray — the small icons near the clock in the bottom-right corner. If they don’t see it, click the ^ arrow to show hidden icons.

“The web page won’t load”

  • Verify the IP address is correct (no typos)
  • Make sure CastAngel is still running on their PC (check for the tray icon)
  • If using a VPN, make sure both PCs are connected to the VPN

“The screen is frozen”

This usually means a network hiccup. Wait a few seconds — CastAngel will reconnect automatically. If it doesn’t, refresh the browser page.

Next Steps

Remote support doesn’t need to be complicated. With CastAngel, your family member double-clicks one file, reads you a number, and you’re fixing their computer from the comfort of your own home.
