How to Remote Desktop into Windows 11 from Another PC
Remote desktop access to a Windows 11 machine is essential for IT support, working from home, or helping family members. Traditional tools like Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) require complex network configuration, while cloud-based solutions like TeamViewer need accounts and subscriptions.
CastAngel takes a different approach: a single portable .exe file that runs on any Windows PC with zero installation. This guide walks you through the entire process.
What You’ll Need
- Host PC (the computer you want to access): Windows 7 SP1 through Windows 11, 32-bit or 64-bit
- Client PC (the computer you’re connecting from): Any modern web browser
- Network: Both PCs on the same local network (LAN), or the host PC accessible via port forwarding
No admin rights are required on either machine. CastAngel runs as a standard user.
Step 1: Download CastAngel
Download the appropriate version for your host PC:
- 64-bit Windows (most modern PCs):
CastAngel-64.exe(~1.5 MB) - 32-bit Windows (older machines):
CastAngel-32.exe(~1.3 MB)
Not sure which version? On the host PC, right-click This PC → Properties → look for “System type.” If it says “64-bit operating system,” use the 64-bit version.
Step 2: Run CastAngel on the Host PC
Double-click the downloaded .exe file. You’ll see:
- A disclaimer dialog — read and click Agree to continue
- A system tray icon (small CastAngel icon near the clock) — right-click it for options
- The host PC is now ready to receive connections
CastAngel automatically:
- Opens a local web server on port 12377 for screen casting
- Opens a file transfer server on port 12399
- Adds Windows Firewall rules to allow local network access
No manual firewall configuration needed — CastAngel handles it automatically.
Step 3: Find the Host PC’s IP Address
Right-click the CastAngel tray icon → Show IP and Port. You’ll see something like:
IP: 192.168.1.42
Port: 12377
Write down this IP address — you’ll need it for the connection.
Step 4: Connect from the Client PC
On your client PC (the one you’re connecting from):
- Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari — any will work)
- Navigate to
http://192.168.1.42:12377(replace with your host PC’s IP) - You’ll see a login page — enter any username and password to create a session
- Click Login
You’re now viewing the host PC’s screen in real-time. You can:
- View the screen with smooth, low-latency video
- Control the mouse and keyboard as if you were sitting in front of it
- Transfer files using the file upload panel
Step 5: Transfer Files (Optional)
CastAngel includes built-in LAN file transfer:
- While connected, use the file upload area on the web page
- Drag and drop files (up to 4 GB each) or click to browse
- Files are saved to the host PC’s desktop, in a folder named after your username
Large files are split into 4 MB chunks for reliable transfer, even on unstable network connections. There’s no file size limit beyond your available disk space.
Connecting Over the Internet (Advanced)
If the host PC is on a different network, you’ll need to make it reachable:
Option A: Port Forwarding (Router)
- Log into your router’s admin panel
- Forward port 12377 (TCP) to the host PC’s local IP
- Forward port 12399 (TCP) for file transfer
- Connect using your router’s public IP:
http://YOUR_PUBLIC_IP:12377
Option B: VPN
Use a VPN like Tailscale or ZeroTier to put both PCs on the same virtual network. Then connect using the host PC’s VPN IP address.
Security tip: CastAngel supports license-based activation. For internet-exposed setups, consider enabling the license requirement to prevent unauthorized access. See our buy page for licensing options.
Troubleshooting
Can’t connect to the host PC
- Check the IP address: Make sure you’re using the correct IP from Step 3
- Check the firewall: CastAngel adds rules automatically, but corporate antivirus may block them. Try temporarily disabling third-party firewall software
- Check the port: Ensure port 12377 isn’t already in use by another application
Screen is blank or laggy
- Network speed: CastAngel adapts to bandwidth, but very slow connections may struggle. Try a wired connection if possible
- Host PC load: Heavy CPU usage on the host can reduce frame rate. Close unnecessary applications
File transfer fails
- Disk space: Check available space on the host PC’s desktop drive
- Permissions: The folder is created on the desktop — ensure the user has write access
